In this lesson, students will be introduced to weaving by learning about its’ importance and the terminology associated with weaving. The students will be focusing on the elements of art and principles of design as they create their own, colorful designs.

IN THIS LESSON, STUDENTS WILL STUDY THE WORK OF STREET INSTALLATION ARTIST, MARK JENKINS. STUDENTS WILL COLLABORATIVELY WORK TOGETHER TO CAST DIFFERENT FORMS BY WRAPPING CLEAR PACKING TAPE IN REVERSE AND THEN RESEALING IT. STUDENTS WILL BE FOCUSING ON BOTH THE ELEMENTS OF ART AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AS THEY CREATE INTERESTING SCULPTURES.In this extra time project, Students will be creating a mosaic out of recycled materials. A mosaic is when an artist arranges many small colored pieces that reveals an image. They can be used to decorate a floor, a wall or in some cases a ceiling. Mosaics have a long history. They were created in Ancient times in Babylon, Egypt, Greece and Rome.
This lesson explored repurposing materials to use as art supplies, while exploring the work of artist, Erika Iris Simmons. Students utilized symbolism to visually depict a song lyric of their choice using the cassette tape as their primary material, while focusing on contour line and shape.
