What is the Sketchbook Challenge?
At the beginning of every class, the 8th grade students will come in and take out their sketchbooks. Students will be given the prompt of day and begin drawing in their sketchbook. Students may create their image in any style, but they must use the entire 25 minutes. Materials are unlimited. If students have extra time at the end of a class, they may continue a previous sketchbook drawing (that will count as an extra time project). Creativity is required. More artwork coming soon... In this lesson, students used their imagination to create a map of an island that represents their identity. Students put anything on the island as long as it is related to themselves, including personality traits, interests, and hobbies. Students also included a key and a compass to help further explain their symbols. Once the students completed their artwork, they wrote an artist statement describing their artwork.
Throughout this lesson, students discussed different ways they identify themselves and created a piece of artwork that express who they are. Students created artworks that include the elements of arts and principles of design, specifically color, line, balance, variety, and unity.
